2003-10-05 - 8:11 p.m.

as a woman of relative leisure, i have had time to sample the coffee and pastries of every beanery in a 2-mile radius. in fact, my friend c and i meet for coffee every tuesday and we make it our business to try every caffeine dispensary within shouting distance. now our hard-won knowledge is here at no additional charge to serve you, the innocent coffee consumer.

  • the verb the verb is the first, the last, my everything. these days it even becomes a wine and cheese bar after 7p. its the oldest hipster caffeine dispensary on the block, and enjoys a central location in the minimall. unfortunately, its often crowded and always very see-and-be-seen. on the plus side, i often run into friends there. on the minus side, there's usually a few people talking too loudly into their cellphones. it's also the ideal place to ponder the state of the williamsburg experiment.
coffee: kinda burnt tasting. proprietary blend.
    music: often tortuous
eats: excellent, but pricey. you could have lunch here, there are usually sandwiches
internet: speedy wi-fi is $15 per week

  • fabiane's right across the street from the verb, excellent sidewalk sipping. a little yuppified with strollers and whatnot for my flavor, but i appreciate their euro take on the cuppa joe. amazing eats just this side of candied.
coffee: excellent, esp. cafe au lait
    music: imperceptible
eats: delectable, also pricey. light sandwiches are excellent, there's also soup and salads.
    internet: no

  • lucky cat its open late so i usually can be found here more in the evenings than the days. but its an excellent hangout anytime, uncrowded and large with eclectic decoration. wine, beer, and many special events in the evenings. feels like an older sister's secret clubhouse. best place for a leisurely game of chess. or to hide from people you don't like.
    coffee: okay
music: can be a little on the goth side
eats: excellent light bites, all vegetarian with some vegan pastries
    internet: no

  • atlas cafe new kid on the block! huge sunny windows expose the coffee drinker to the whole passing world. the fact that they sell the new york times and are located halfway between my home and my gym lures me in many mornings. it's very easy to overcaffeinate at atlas.
coffee: really, really good. pete's organic.
    music: normally inoffensive
    eats: limited. fantastic brownies!
    internet: yes! speedy free wi-fi.

  • fix another newish place, cozy secretive interior with gorgeous copper ceilings. spacious, comfy booths and velvety couches. can fill up fast in the afternoons. dogs and small children seem to like this place. normally that would be a strike against a place, but there seems to be room for everyone at fix.
coffee: locally roasted porto rico, very good. usually pouring more than one roast. also very many teas! music: inoffensive
    eats: just bagels. and chocolate.
internet: wi-fi soon, not just yet.

  • hope and union newish bakery and coffee place, so near to my studio i'm developing a habit. delectable coffees and a smallish but pleasant interior. the baked goods and sandwiches are where this place really shines. my whole summer was saved by their lemonade.
    coffee: very good, esp. iced.
    music: decent
eats: best brownies and cookies this side of grandma's house.
    internet: no
